| Vice－Premier calls for establishment of medical emergency mechanisms |

Chinese Vice－Premier Wu Yi has called for the immediate establishment of a national emergency mechanism to prevent the spread of diseases.
Speaking at a seminar at the China Disease Precaution and Research Center, Wu discussed a variety of topics related to disease prevention and the strengthening of precautionary measures. She stressed the urgent need to establish public health information and early warning systems. She added that top priority should at present be given to the control of severe acute respiratory syndrome, better known as the SARS virus. Wu also called for efforts to beef up medical reforms and improve the country's disease control system.
