Top officials from China's southwestern municipality of Chongqing have vowed to transform the city into an economic hub. They delivered the message on the sidelines of the ongoing NPC Session in Beijing.
Huang Zhendong is the Secretary of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee. He says the government has come up with a 20-year plan to boost the city's economy.
In 2020, Chongqing's economic output is expected to reach 1,000 billion yuan or 120 billion US dollars, more than 5 times last year's figure.
The former Chinese Minister of Communications says the government will go all out to aid the construction of infrastructure in Chongqing.
According to Wang Hungju, Chongqing's mayor, up to 2,000 kilometers of superhighways and two new airports will be built in the next seven years.
A big challenge to the Chongqing government will be to help increase the income of farmers. It's been five years since the municipality was founded and Chongqing still has the biggest number of farmers of China's four municipalities.
Farmers make up nearly 40 percent of the Chongqing population and their average income is way below the national average.
Chongqing authorities say they are stepping up efforts to help many farmers participate in the industrial sector or start their own businesses.
