As the National People's Congress entered its third-day, top Chinese leaders continued attending group discussions on government reports, exchanging views with deputies on building a well-off society in China.
President Jiang Zemin joined a delegation from Guangdong province to listen to the deputies' discussions on local development.
South China's Guangdong province is renowned for its strong economy. Jiang Zemin praised the province for its rapid economic development. He encouraged the local officials to take the lead in building a well-off society by continuing opening up and developing the market economy.
CPC General Secretary, Hu Jintao, attended heated discussions in the Hong Kong and Macao delegations. He listened to the deputies' views on improving economic and educational ties between the mainland and the two special administrative regions.
Hu Jintao pledged that the CPC's new leadership will firmly implement the "one country, two systems" policy and give full support to the chief executives of the two regions.
Top legislator, Li Peng, joined group discussions with deputies from southwestern China's Sichuan province. He noted that the government's western development program has brought unprecedented opportunities to the most populated province. He said that as agriculture is the key industry in the region, provincial officials should support farmers to develop food industry and build their own brands to earn the most out of their land.
