Since it's now officially announced that China has won the bid to host the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, celebrations have begun across China, and especially in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai. Beating out four other bidders, China gets set to dazzle the world. There's plenty to do in the next eight years, and Shanghai citizens say they're up to the task.

A grandest carnival celebrating the victory is going on in Centennial Square in Nanjing Road in downtown Shanghai.

People immersed in waves of shouting, cheering, and tears of joy. With this victory, China becomes the first developing country to host a World Expo since the first one 150 years ago. For many Chinese, it's a well-deserved victory.

“After three years of bidding efforts, Shanghai is awarded this great glory. This brings pride to the Shanghai people and the Chinese nation. I'm very happy about it,” said a Shanghai citizen.

This gala in Nanjing Road is one of the many celebrations going on in the city's streets and bars, in universities and residential communities.

The victory is an end as well as a beginning. It is the end of a three-year bidding campaign in which Shanghai survived tough competition from Moscow, Queretaro of Mexico, Wroclow of Poland, and Yeoso of the Republic of Korea.

And it is still the beginning of a longer journey, which involves the overhaul of a 400-hectare area in the old city for the Expo venue. Many here say that by 2010, Shanghai will be able to present the world with the most successful, impressive, and unforgettable World Expo ever.

More than one year ago, the same tide of cheers swept through Beijing as it carried off the bid for the 2008 Olympics. The Chinese have good reasons to hope that these two events will serve as dual engines making China a more open and stronger nation.
