China celebrates Shanghai's successful bid to host World Expo

    Shanghai has won its bid to host the World Expo in 2010. The Bureau of International Expositions made its announcement at a news conference in Monte Carlo on Tuesday. The Chinese government and people hail Shanghai's successful bid to hold the World Expo 2010.

    After four rounds of vote, the 132nd General Assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions chose Shanghai as the host city of the World Expo 2010. Shanghai won 54 votes in the fourth round of voting, followed by Yeoso of South Korea with 34 votes. Shanghai's successful bid makes China the first developing country to ever host the event, which made its debut 151 years ago.

    In his letter of thanks to the Bureau of International Expositions, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said the World Exposition Shanghai 2010 would further develop international expositions, contribute to the peace and progress of mankind and draw closer relations between China and the Bureau of International Expositions.

    Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji also sent his letter of thanks to the Bureau of International Expositions. He reiterated that the Chinese government will honor its commitments and make thorough preparations to provide all participating countries with complete facilities and satisfactory services.

    The Chinese Foreign Ministry says that China has become one of the most dynamic economies in the world. It also says that since Shanghai is the center of China's economy, finance and foreign trade, it has ample resources for hosting the event.
