 With the decision on which city will host the 2010 World Expo due on December 3 at the 132nd General Assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions in Monaco, public fervor is running wild in China's candidate city, Shanghai.
On Sunday, more than 10,000 Shanghai residents participated in a long distance running race, held on a newly built elevated road, to show support for Shanghai's bid to host the 2010 World Expo. Waving paper flags, runners head for the finishing line with all they've got. White－haired elderly citizens do not yield to the youngsters beside them. Parents and children, sisters and brothers, they're all here to lend their feet in support for their beloved city.
People from all walks of life nationwide have been highly supportive of Shanghai's Expo bid, ever since it was launched on May 2, 2001. A Gallup poll shows that over 90 percent of Chinese citizens want to see Shanghai host the Expo. Retired workers in one Shanghai district spent two months building a dragon boat model. They presented it to the municipal government as a gift.
In a record－breaking online show of support, over 10,000 Internet－surfers contributed to a recent online chat over China's World Expo bid, expressing confidence that Shanghai would win the race.
Shanghai's per－capita gross domestic product has increased from 1,000 US dollars in 1977 to 4,500 US dollars in 2001, laying a solid foundation for the coastal city to help drive the national economy as well as become a world economic, trade, financial and transport hub.
