| Chinese president meets Russian, ROK, Japanese leaders |

 Chinese President Jiang Zemin has met with leaders from Russia, the Republic of Korea and Japan in the Mexican city of Los Cabos where he discussed issues ranging from inter－Korean relations to the Moscow hostage crisis. The meetings were held on Sunday as the 10th APEC Economic Leaders' meeting came to a close.
President Jiang has left the Mexican city of Los Cabos. He will stop shortly in the US city of San Francisco on his way home to Beijing.
When meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, Jiang Zemin condemned the recent hostage taking in Moscow by Chechen separatists in which more than 100 people were killed.
Jiang voiced firm support for the action of the Russian government to crack down on separatism in Chechnya. He also expressed appreciation over the Russian government's settlement of the hostage crisis.
Kasyanov, who was attending the APEC meeting on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said President Putin was looking forward to his visit to China in December.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the healthy development of bilateral ties. On Iraq and other issues of common concern, they agreed that China and Russia have identical or similar positions on many major international issues and will work together to safeguard world peace.
When meeting with South Korean President Kim Dae－Jung, Jiang reiterated that China supports a nuclear－free Korean Peninsula. He said the nuclear weapons issue regarding the Democratic People's Republic of Korea had recently drawn concern across the world and that he hoped the DPRK and the US could settle their issues through dialogue. Jiang stressed that it is China's consistent position to safeguard peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.
Jiang Zemin told Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi that the Chinese and Japanese people have enjoyed a long－standing friendship. He recalled his gathering with 13,000 Japanese guests at a grand reception in Beijing last month to celebrate 30 years of normalized bilateral ties.
However, he said, the Japanese military invasion of China in the 1930's and 1940's had inflicted great suffering on the Chinese people. He said he hoped the Japanese government would properly deal with that part of its history and work towards a long－lasting friendship with China.
