Chinese President Jiang Zemin met with Mexican President Vicente Fox and Indonesian counterpart Megawati Soekarnoputri on Saturday in the Mexican city of Los Cabos, where they are both attending the APEC Economic Leaders' meeting. The leaders discussed ways to further develop cooperation.
President Jiang has also addressed the APEC CEO summit, saying that APEC members need to take "more vigorous steps", both for the sake of their own economic development and in the interest of the world economy.
Later in the day, President Jiang Zemin delivered a speech at the APEC's CEO summit. He urged APEC members to rein in trade protectionism, which he said may have protected domestic companies in the short run, by securing the home market. However, in the longer run, it not only constrains business opportunities for foreign companies, but also hinders the development of domestic companies.
The Chinese President told business leaders that China's growing economy has positively contributed to the global development in recent years. He also said China can help Latin American countries affected by uncertainties in the world economy."
In the seaside resort in northern Mexico, the Chinese President met with Mexican President Vicente Fox. Mexico is the host country for the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. President Vicente Fox welcomed the Chinese President attending the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting. He praised China's significant role in maintaining world peace.
The Chinese President congratulated Mexico on its excellent preparation work for this meeting. He said China and Mexico are important trading partners. Jiang Zemin added that the two countries should continue to develop their trade relations.
The Mexican President stressed that China is a cooperation partner with Mexico, not a competitor. He added that the two counties should continue to develop trade potentialities. He noted that Mexico has become the largest trading partner of China in Latin America. He added that bilateral trade volume increased to more than 1.9 billion US dollars last year. The two leaders also discussed anti-terrorism strategy and the Iraqi issue.
The Chinese President also met Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri. The meeting was the third between the Chinese and Indonesian Presidents in just one year. They met during the last APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting held in Shanghai, China last year, and again during Megawati's visit to China in March earlier this year.
President Jiang noted that the economies of the two nations are highly complementary, and expressed his view that there are broad prospects for them to cooperate in economy and trade.
The Chinese President also says that although the growth of global economic and trade relations has slowed in recent years, trade relations between the two countries have experienced steady growth.
Megawati says that in the future, the two nations can further expand their cooperation in the fields of transportation, fisheries and agriculture to promote full-scale development.
This year's economic leaders' meeting is intended to deal with economic growth policies in the region. But global security issues appear to be dominating the meeting ,following a series of terror attacks in Indonesia, the Philippines and Russia -- three members of APEC. It's expected that the leaders will talk about ways to prevent terror attacks, as well as measures to ensure that these actions do not hurt economic growth.
