Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin delivered a speech at the George Bush Presidential Library in Houston on Thursday. In his speech, President Jiang touched on a range of subjects from world peace to the current state of Sino-US relations.
Speaking at a function hosted by the George Bush Presidential Library, President Jiang Zemin said "strengthening peace and development on both regional and global level served China's fundamental interests."
The president said the US and Chinese economies are highly complementary and the cultures of the two countries have distinctive features.
Noting that there exists a vast potential for cooperation in the areas of trade, energy, environment, science, technology and education, President Jiang said a constructive relationship between the two nations is in the fundamental interests of both the Chinese and American people and meets their common aspirations.
President Jiang said he hoped the George Bush Presidential Library would become yet another American center for China studies and Sino-US activities.
He then briefed his audience on China's modernization process. On economic reform, he said that after years of effort, China's gross domestic product last year reached 7.4 times that of 1980, with an average annual growth rate of 9.5 percent.
The Chinese president reiterated China's stand on continuing its opening-up policy, saying that "China's development over the past 20 years and more has proved that persisting along the path of reform and opening-up was imperative in the country's progression."
President Jiang said that "some strategic decisions will be made on advancing China's reform on all fronts, including its opening-up and modernization drive" at the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, to be held next month.
