Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in Houston today after leaving Chicago on the second day of his working visit to the United States.
Described by many Americans as the "City of Space and Energy", Houston gave a big welcome to the Chinese president and his wife.
President Jiang was greeted at the airport by Ellington Field Base Commander Steve Jones and Houston Mayor Lee Brown, who presented the Chinese president with the keys to the city, a symbol of friendship.
When President Jiang arrived at the gate of the hotel where he is to stay, he was warmly received by former US President George Bush, Senior.
On the Chinese president's agenda today will be a tour of the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The center is a vital US space technology research base and space mission training station.
President Jiang will then hold talks with former US President George Bush at Texas A-and-M University and deliver a speech at the George Bush Presidential Library in the University.
The high point of his trip will be a meeting with George W. Bush at the US president's Texas ranch tomorrow.
Following his US visit, the Chinese president will continue on to Los Cabos, Mexico, where he will attend the 10th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting this weekend.
