Mainland, Taiwan blend SARS approaches

The Chinese mainland and Taiwan began their first tele-conference on the interactive medical treatment of SARS this morning (Monday). The meeting aimed to allow doctors from across the Taiwan Strait to improve SARS treatment methods through a combination of traditional Chinese herbal medicine and western medicine. The conference was jointly sponsored by the associations of interactive medicine from the two sides.

The conference gathers some of the leading doctors across the Strait in interactive medicine. The approach has so far been extensively used in mainland's fight against SARS, but not yet fully developed in Taiwan.

"At present, the SARS epidemic is abating on the mainland, but that in Taiwan has not yet been brought under control, with new cases continue to rise. The medical communities across the Strait should therefore work together and share experience to overcome this crisis," said Chen Keji, president of Chinese Association of Interactive Medicine.

The interactive treatment has so far proved effective on the mainland. About half of the SARS patients in Beijing and more than one-third across the mainland receive such protocol. According to a study based on 399 cases in six designated hospitals, it can result in shortened days of fever, reduced usage of steroid hormone and better absorption of pathological changes in the patient's lung, therefore leading to higher cure rate.

"Statistics show that SARS mortality rate in the mainland is around 6 percent. That is about 4 percent lower than that in Taiwan. From this sense, this treatment is proving effective and deserves more exchanges across the Strait," said Chen Keji.

Experts says that due to a lack of understanding in the origin of SARS, both chinese and western medicines have their limitation in treating it. A combination of the two, which may exploit the advantages of both, could be a best answer to the disease at this stage.

The conference will also tap into such issues as effectively containing infection in hospitals, which is still a challenge facing medical community in Taiwan.

This is the first time a symposium on interactive treatment on SARS is held across the Strait. Last month, a similar conference focusing on SARS treatment through Chinese traditional herbal medicine was held between the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
