Small group travel -- this is the latest overseas travel promotion launched by some travel agencies in Beijing. This offer is just one of those intending to promote tourism since the SARS tension eased in the city.
Travel agencies say the small group package is designed mainly for family members or friends. Four to eight people can make up such a group to travel to Australia, Thailand, Singapore, or the Hong Kong region.
At the same time, many overseas agencies are ready to welcome tourists from China. Xu Shengli, representative for Beijing Office of German Tourism Administration, said, "German government welcomes Chinese people to do business or travel in Germany. Since the outbreak of SARS, major organizations in Germany haven't set any restrictions for people from SARS-affected areas. People take physical check voluntarily at German customs and ports. "
China is one of the most important sources of tourists to Thailand. To boost its tourism sector, the Thai government will invest 68 million baht to buy insurance for foreign tourists. A representative for Beijing Office of Thai Tourism Administration said, "In six months from now on, insurance companies will pay 100,000 US dollars for each tourist who is infected by SARS in Thailand."
Insiders say in the near future, overseas travel in Beijing will be characterized by smaller groups traveling shorter distances than in the past.
