Southwest China's Sichuan Province will hold a commodity fair in Alma－ata, capital of Kazakstan, in late June to boost its economic ties with central Asian countries.
Li Dachang, a senior official of Sichuan, said several hundred businesses from different sectors would be present at the fair, which is also sponsored by Alma－ata State, and that businesses from Russia and other central Asian countries had also been invited.
Sichuan businesses entered the central Asian market in the early 1990s, and over the past two years, their exports to the region have increased sharply.
In 2001, exports from Sichuan to the region amounted to 4.73 million US dollars, a 280 percent rise over that of the previous year.
In 2002, the figure jumped to 57.5 million dollars, 12.2 times more than that of 2001.
Trade between Sichuan and central Asian countries is centered on oil production, rail transport, home electrical appliances, light industry, chemicals, agriculture and construction.
Sichuan has established business ties with 136 countries and regions, and approved the establishment of 5,188 foreign－funded businesses in the province, including 72 of the world's top 500 enterprises.
