Russia and the European Union (EU) opened their summit on Saturday in St. Petersburg, the first of its kind since the war on Iraq.
The summit came amid the celebrations marking St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary and was attended by 14 of the 15 current EU leaders and the leaders from 10 new EU membership hopefuls from central and eastern Europe.
Opening the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed current and future members of the EU to the meeting.
Among others, the summit is expected to underline Russia's central role in Europe.
It is unclear whether the leaders will be able to endorse a joint final statement by the end of the summit.
