No birthday is complete without gifts, and St. Peterburg has received some rather grand ones. The celebrations marking St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary have reached a climax and the city has received many birthday gifts from 27 countries. But the biggest one came from China's Shanghai Municipality-- a Friendship Garden.
China's Shanghai Municipality, the Chinese "sister" city of St. Petersburg since 1988, has created a Chinese garden for the city, the Friendship Garden, as its birthday gift.
Friendship Garden is located at the center of St. Petersburg. The Chinese style pavilions and a wall with decorated with cloud features have attracted the attention of many visitors. A wall of colorful china featuring nine dragons is also leaving a deep impression on visitors.
From August last year, more than 20 workers from Shanghai's garden companies worked on the project of 2,000 square meters to complete it in three and a half months. Although the formal presentation ceremony has not yet been held, more and more tourists are visiting the garden to get a preview.
"This is a really beautiful small garden. I like it very much. Chinese people have built an amazing garden. Thank you and best wishes to you," said a Russian visitor.
In fact the Friendship Garden has been the favorite tourist attraction during the birthday celebrations. It has added a bright gem of Eastern charm to this beautiful, essentially European style city.
