Cross-straits cooperation on SARS strengthened

    A cross-straits teleconference on the prevention of SARS was held Tuesday morning. Experts from Beijing, Taipei, Guangzhou and Hong Kong exchanged their views on the control and prevention of SARS, without meeting face to face.

    Major topics of the teleconference focused on diagnosis of the disease, characteristics of the epidemic, healing with medicine, prevention and control measures, and contagion during the incubation period.

    Beijing expert Yang Weizhong said SARS patients have low infectivity during their incubation periods. An expert from Guangzhou, Xu Ruiheng analyzed the epidemic features of SARS. He said the average incubation period of SARS patients is 4.5 days, with a range from 1 to 12 days.

    Taipei expert Lin Ruixiong also brought out his hypothesis on the spread of SARS at the seminar. All the participants held the view that it is necessary to exchange experience regularly and to strengthen cooperation across the straits.
