In the central Chinese city of Wuhan, locals and government officials have joined together to combat SARS, and are taking measures to ensure a safe working and living environment for the city's 1,200 overseas residents.

After the first reports on SARS, the Wuhan city government set up a headquarters directly under its leadership, and implemented measures to provide a safe living and working environment for the citizens of Wuhan. Special focus has been given to overseas-funded firms, and universities with overseas experts and students, so they could continue to work, study as usual and live their normal life.

Niel Gade, deputy general manager of Yangtze Optical Fiber and Cable Co. Ltd., said, "Both from a foreigner's view also from YFC's management, we consider that the precautions made by the Chinese government and authorities here in the province and all of China seem to be reasonable and hopefully things will get better soon."

American teacher Marilyn Harmon from Jianghan University said, "I appreciated everything they did, for I know what they did is for my safety. They were concerned about me, trying to protect me and the students. Jianghan University is beautiful, the buildings are nice, the campus is nice, but what makes life so funny are the students. They have had a good attitude through this time. They make life fun here for the teachers."

No matter what disasters or emergencies are encountered, and regardless of how powerful the virus is, with a positive attitude and united efforts, work and life can go on.
