Taiwan confirmed 65 new SARS cases and 487 suspected cases on Thursday, the biggest jump in infections since the virus broke out on the island.

Among the new cases reported yesterday, Taipei had 44 new cases, Kaohsiung had two and there was one death. According to Taiwan's health authorities, Taiwan has so far confirmed a total of 483 cases and 60 deaths.

The chief of Taiwan's disease control center explained the sharp rise reported is due to improvements in the confirmation procedure. In Kaohsiung, the local authority has sped up the construction of two military hospitals to specially treat SARS patients.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's health authorities announced it imposed fine on another two hospitals in Taipei because they concealed or delayed reporting cases of the epidemic. Five hospitals have been penalized so far.
