Guangdong provincial health authorities are mobilizing recovered SARS patients to donate blood for SARS research and to help treat those infected by the virus. "Donate your blood to help conquer SARS" is the theme of the campaign which was launched on Saturday in Guangzhou.

On Saturday, workers at the Guangzhou Blood Center took blood samples from 14 medical care workers who have recovered from SARS. Many of them have already donated blood for the treatment of SARS patients.

A 20-year-old nurse, Yan Lili, became infected while treating SARS patients. She later recovered and was discharged from hospital in mid-March. Despite feeling physically drained after her recovery, she soon donated 100 milliliters of blood serum to save the life of Professor Jiang, her senior colleague who had contracted SARS after her. Now with Yan Lili's help, the professor has also recovered.

Yan Lili said, "I was quite willing to donate blood, if I could help Professor Jiang recover as soon as possible. That's why one of my colleagues and I donated blood."

Medical care workers in Guangzhou are hoping that their pioneering moves will encourage recovered SARS patients in other professions to join them and donate their blood, either for the treatment of SARS victims with severe symptoms or for scientific research to help find a way of conquering the virus.
