Yao Ming says the purpose of the telethon is to help tide over his homeland during its current difficulties.

"At the very beginning I didn't expect the program would be such a large-scale one. We just want to show our concern in some way," said Yao Ming.

Many big names in sports and entertainment will join Yao Ming for the fundraiser. The NBA will be represented by superstar Michael Jordan and Commissioner David Stern. Soccer star Vitor Rivaldo and tennis great Andre Agassi will also be in the line-up. Chinese soccer stars, who will provide a kick are Sun Wen, Qi Hong and Li Weifeng.

Yao Ming and other athletes will autograph basketballs and other souvenirs for viewers.
