The Jianlan Middle School, with over 1,600 students, in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, resumed classes on Saturday after a two-week closure due to the SARS epidemic.

Jianlan was the first school to be closed as a result of the SARS outbreak.

According to local sources, three people in Hangzhou city were diagnosed with SARS on April 20.

The children of one of the SARS patients, one of whom developed a fever, and a younger brother, were studying at the middle school.

School authorities ordered the suspension of all classes in the school on April 21 after consultation with relevant government departments and the isolation of students and teachers in the same classes as the suspect children.

The two children most likely to have caught SARS were cleared after two weeks isolation and no other suspected cases were found among other students.

Principal Gong Jingen said that although classes had resumed, precautions would not be relaxed.

Gong said every student was required to have the temperature taken at home before going to school and fill out a health report.

The classrooms and school yard would be fully disinfected everyday, and outside personnel were also required to have their temperatures taken and fill out health disclosure forms before entering the school.
