Toronto objects to WHO travel warning

Canada on Wednesday urged the World Health Organization to lift its advisory against travel to Toronto, the nation's largest city hit hard by SARS. And in Japan and Australia, where SARS cases are rare, stricter measures are being taken to curb the spread of the disease.

Toronto's mayor Mel Lasman has lambasted the WHO for issuing an advisory against all non-essential travel to the city.

Lasman said, "I'm shocked that the medical evidence before us does not support this advisory. And I'm told they have never issued an advisory like this before in their history. In fact, I don't even know, and nobody here knows if they have ever been here. "

According to WHO, Toronto's outbreak continues to grow and has affected groups outside the initial risk group of hospital workers, families, visitors and other close person-to-person contacts.

In Japan, new technology is being installed at the country's largest international airport near Tokyo to detect feverish passengers traveling from areas plagued by SARS. A thermal image camera, which was tested on Wednesday, scans human bodies for unusually high temperature. Passengers with a fever will be taken aside and advised to visit the airport clinic.

Elsewhere, Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, announced on Wednesday it will empower authorities to quarantine those with SARS symptoms. Under new regulations, police could force suspected SARS sufferers to undergo testing and treatment if they refuse to cooperate.
