Measures have been tightened across China at all levels to control the spread of SARS as more cases are reported in more areas. The Ministry of Railways is working with the Ministry of Communications to guarantee the transport of SARS prevention medicines within 24 hours.
The Ministry of Railways has designated three inspection groups to go to nine areas nationwide to check on the latest information on the supervision of the disease. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shenyang are on the list. The ministry has also required thorough, comprehensive disinfection of every train compartment. Once SARS cases are reported, people must be promptly quarantined and disinfected to prevent the spread.
A nationwide campaign against the disease is also underway. In Hunan, Anhui and Jiangxi Provinces, schools are teaching students about effective prevention and treatment of the disease.
Education departments in east China's Zhejiang Province and its capital city of Hangzhou have started an emergency prevention scheme in all schools. Every school and kindergarten in Hangzhou has established its own SARS prevention and control team, responsible for disinfecting campuses and classrooms, supplying soaps and increasing ventilation in classrooms.
In Hunan Province, pharmacies are seeing brisk business. Almost all the stores have large billboards specifying detailed prescriptions and medicine prices for customer convenience.
The Ministry of Communications has issued a notice to all of its provincial branches to prepare emergency transport for potential SARS patients. The ministry is working with the Ministry of Railways and the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China to guarantee the transport of SARS prevention medicines within 24 hours.
