Comprehensive plans have been worked out to ease worries over SARS on planes and trains in China. These include screening passengers exhibiting SARS-like symptoms.
The State Civil Aviation Administration has set up a special work group to deal with SARS prevention along China's air routes. The group's draft recommendations include stopping crewmembers and passengers exhibiting symptoms such as fever, sharp coughing and shortness of breath, from getting aboard. Any confirmed SARS patients will be promptly transferred to the quarantine departments at airports or local designated hospitals for isolation and further treatment.
The draft also requires the interiors of planes to be well ventilated and thoroughly disinfected. Crewmembers who have close contact with SARS patients or passengers with suspicious symptoms should be isolated for a period for more observation. The draft also demands airports and airlines to provide surgical masks and other necessary medicines for crewmembers and passengers.
The Ministry of Railways has also established a similar coordination group. Administration departments at all levels are required to adopt strict sterilization and quarantine measures at railway stations and on trains. Surgical masks, thermometers, disinfectant and gloves must be made available in the compartments of passenger trains.
Crewmembers are now having classes on symptoms and major disease-stricken areas. Passenger trains should keep in touch with medical departments along their routes to report any SARS cases.
