1,268 SARS cases reported, 53 people die

    The Chinese Ministry of Health has publicized the latest epidemic information on the spread of atypical pneumonia or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) on the Chinese mainland.

    A total of 1,268 SARS cases were reported up until the April 6, and 53 people have died. Statistics indicate that the incidence rate of this disease is dropping, though slowly.

    Among all the people infected by the disease, the number of infected medical care personnel has dropped remarkably and 98 percent of SARS patients in Guangdong have recovered and left the hospital. The infection rate has dropped to about 25 percent from the past 33 percent.
