The ongoing first session of the tenth National Committee of the CPPCC has been widely acclaimed for its wider representation. Notably, senior managers and executives from overseas－funded companies have for the first time entered the highest tier of China's political life and found an ideal place to voice their concerns.
Chen Qiwei, chairman of the board of Coca－Cola Co. in China, is one of the new members of the Tenth National Committee of the CPPCC. This comes on the 24 anniversary of the company's operation in China.
"China has given social recognition to overseas－funded companies for some time. And now our political status is assured, not by lip service, but through real participation in state affairs," Chen said.
Chen Qiwei told reporters that chairman of Coca－Cola's head office in the US sent him a letter of congratulations immediately upon learning the good news, saying that Chen's personal honor also belongs to the whole company.
Cai Guoxiong, veteran deputy general－manager of Motorola, is another senior executive sharing this excitement.
Cai Guoxiong, deputy general－manager of Motorola Corp., said: "I strongly support people like us to participate in China's state affairs, so we can give first－hand information to our head offices and better cooperate with China's policy readjustment."
Cai is not the only one to feel buoyant. All staffers in his Beijing office feel the same.
A Motorola Staff said: "We feel so glad of his success. Representatives from overseas companies can better express our political concerns and demonstrate that our country is more open."
Besides newly－elected members, this new session of the CPPCC has also invited some representatives from overseas banks to be present at the conference. Zhang Hongli, general manager of the Deutsche Bank's China office, is one of them. His colleagues take this as an important message that the Chinese government considers the reforms in financial sector very important. They say they feel the government's sincerity to learn from international practice in this process.
