Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday visited Luoyang, an ancient capital city in central China's Henan Province, continuing his official visit in China.

Accompanied by local officials, the Indian prime minister visited the Longmen Grottoes, one of China's three largest grotto complexes, and the Baima (white horse) Temple, a renowned Buddhist monastery.

Henan Governor Li Chengyu, briefing Vajpayee on his province, said that more than 1,900 years ago, two Indian monks had arrived in Luoyang to spread Buddhism. The temple, built to commemorate them, embodies the friendship between the Chinese and Indian peoples.

Li also expressed the wish to expand cooperation between the province and India.

Vajpayee said he was pleased to see the Buddhist sculptures in the Longmen Grottoes, noting that India and China, as neighbors and inheritors of civilizations, must cooperate more effectively in order to meet the challenges currently faced by both.

Vajpayee added that he had met with Chinese leaders in Beijing and signed a series of cooperative agreements, which he said would further fortify bilateral ties.

He left Luoyang Wednesday evening for Shanghai to continue his China visit.
