The Shanghai-based China Pacific Insurance Company (CPIC) and the People's Insurance Company of China's Shanghai branch signed contracts Friday with the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau to offer free insurance to local medical workers serving on the front line in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

The CPIC will provide insurance to employees working in anti-SARS fields ranging from prevention, urgent transportation, supervision, research and clinical areas.

Employees working in these areas who are infected by SARS will receive compensation in the amount of 20,000 yuan (2,400 US dollars), while the beneficiaries of those who lose their lives or are left disabled as a consequence of SARS will receive 200,000 yuan (24,000 dollars) in compensation.

The Shanghai Branch of the People's Insurance Company will offer free service to medical staff working in 500 local medical units covered by the company, with the same compensation terms and amounts as the CPIC promises to offer.

To date, no medical personnel in Shanghai have been infected by SARS, according to the local health department.

Officials with the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau have pledged that the city will do its utmost to protect local medical staff from SARS infection.
