The number of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases on the Chinese mainland is on a steady, yet fluctuating decline trend, said Yao Keqin, a senior analyst with the national SARS prevention and treatment team, on Friday.

The number of SARS cases rose steadily until April 28, when the number of cases peaked, and has been declining ever since, Yao noted.

Even in Beijing municipality, the most heavily-infected region, the number has begun to drop.

The number of new SARS cases reported in Beijing for the period from 10:00 a.m. May 8 to 10:00 a.m. May 9 was 48, the lowest since April 20, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health.

The spiraling number of SARS cases has been effectively checked in Beijing, and the epidemic has shown signs of declining, Liang Wannian, a noted epidemiologist and deputy director of the Beijing Health Bureau, told a press conference on Friday.

The number of diagnosed SARS patients hospitalized in Beijing has dropped to between 30 and 40 per day over the past week from a daily average of 70 to 80 between April 21 and May 2, Liang explained.

To date, 25 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions on the Chinese mainland have reported probable or suspect SARS cases, according to Yao.

From May 2 to May 8, most of the SARS cases reported were discovered in north China's Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Tianjin and Hebei, Yao added.

As of 10:00 a.m. May 9, no SARS cases had been discovered in Hainan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, the Tibet autonomous region, Qinghai province or the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

In the meantime, provinces such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Liaoning and Jiangxi provinces and Chongqing municipality had reported no more than five diagnosed cases.

In Shandong, Hunan and Fujian provinces, no new cases had been reported for the past 15, 18 and 31 days, respectively.

The ratio of infected medical workers to total SARS patients has declined from 22.2 percent on April 22 to 19.3 percent on May 9, Yao said.
