An international health and beauty product technology expo opened in Shenzhen Thursday, attracting over 100 companies from Japan, the United States, Canada and other parts of China.

Despite the atypical pneumonia fears plaguing southern China, 12 international exhibitions have been held in Shenzhen as planned since March and no changes have been reported for those to be held this May and June, said Wang Weiyue, general manager of the Managing and Service Company of the China Hi-Tech Fair Exhibition Center.

Covering an area of 42,000 square meters, the Shenzhen-based exhibition center in south China's Guangdong Province hosts about 70 fairs annually, Wang said.

The center has beefed up ventilation and disinfecting work to ensure the safety of visitors, Wang said.

"Here I see few people wearing gauze masks, which reassures me that atypical pneumonia is under control now," said a retired teacher surnamed Huang from Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

Together with more than 30 fellow tourists, Huang came by bus to the expo to learn something about beauty and health care.

In recent years, people are paying more attention to beauty and health care as their living standards improve, which has strengthened the development of the industry, said Wei Jinkui, director of the Shenzhen Committee of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, which sponsored the exhibition.
