After a week of overcast weather followed by the hottest day of the summer yesterday (Monday), Beijing now looks set for some cool breezes. According to the latest forecast, a cold front moving from Siberia will arrive in northern China within a couple of days, causing temperatures to drop by several degrees.
Monday was the hottest day so far this summer in many Chinese cities. From Beijing to Guangzhou, from Shanghai to Chongqing, the highest temperatures recorded in most regions exceeded 35 degrees Celsius. In Zhejiang and Hunan, the figure was as high as 42 degrees. Experts with the Central Meteorological Station say the heat wave will linger on for a few more days in northern China. The city government of Guangzhou even issued a high-temperature alarm, reminding residents to reduce outdoor activities.
But the cold front, currently in Inner Mongolia, is moving fast southward. Its arrival this week will bring rainfall, allaying the sweltering heat.
