The incidence of cancer in China has been rising since the 1970s. The Ministry of Health has identified eight cancers as major threats to the health of Chinese people.
Statistics show deaths from the eight cancers account for 80 percent of the total cancer-related deaths in the country with lung cancer being the No.1 killer. The ministry has listed these cancers as major diseases for prevention and control.
The eight cancers are: 1. Lung Cancer 2. Liver Cancer 3. Stomach Cancer 4. Esophagus Cancer 5. Rectum & Colon Cancer 6. Breast Cancer 7. Cervical Cancer 8. Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Medical experts are advocating healthy life styles as well as early diagnosis and treatment to prevent and control cancer, particularly in rural areas which have suffered the most cancer deaths. Statistics show two million new cancer patients are diagnosed in China each year and 70 percent of them eventually succumb to the disease.
