Typhoon Imbudo tears into south China
   CCTV.COM   2003-07-24 15:07:30
Typhoon Imbudo, one of the most powerful in years, has torn into the west of south China's Guangdong province, after injuring at least eleven people in the Hong Kong SAR. But emergency measures were already in place in Guangdong Province, to prevent further damage from the howling winds and torrential rains.

Rain has been running rampant in many counties since Imbudo arrived in Guangdong Province. And the meteorological office predicts more heavy rainfall over the whole of Guangdong in the next few days.

"Imbudo will continue to move northwest and will hit Guangxi Province soon. We'd like to remind regions along Imbudo's way that it's already the peak season of typhoon's occurrence. Though this year's typhoons come later than usual, they are more powerful, " said Zhou Qinliang, the deputy director of Central Meteorological Administration Forecast Office

Imbudo has already made lots of trouble in Guangdong, disrupting normal traffic, especially long-haul flights. At Guangzhou's Baiyun Airport, an international flight to Sydney was cancelled. Domestic flights to Sanya in Hainan province were delayed. Cruises leaving from major harbors in the west of Guangdong were also suspended. To minimize the potential damage by Imbudo, many cities in Guangdong have organized special rescue teams, ready to cope with the worst possible situations.

As Guangdong waited for the full impact of the typhoon, life in Hong Kong slowly returned to normal, though strong winds and heavy squalls were expected off and on through the day. The territory has lowered its warning level, signaling to businesses and offices that it is now safe to reopen.
