China has approved Cuba as an authorized tourism destination for Chinese travelers. The Caribbean country is the first nation in the Western Hemisphere to gain Approved Destination Status from the Chinese government.
Cuba has over 1,600 islands and tourism is an important industry. Both countries say they believe the move will further enhance their economic and trade ties.
So far, Chinese travelers can visit 24 nations and regions altogether. In recent years, the number of Chinese travelers going abroad has been growing, surpassing 16 million last year. The World Tourism Organization predicts China will become the fourth largest tourist source nation by 2020.
