After closing for a thorough 15-month refurbishment, the National Museum of Fine Arts, China's top museum of modern arts has unveiled its new face to the public. Today's (Wednesday) reopening of this treasure house of national arts comes on the same day as the museum's 40th birthday.
The ceremony was a big gathering of the country's art community with veteran painters like Wu Guanzhong attending to highlight the museum's rebirth.
The facade, structure and composition of the old building haven't been changed during the renovation, but the museum has expanded to 6,800 square meters from the previous 5,600 square meters and seven new exhibition halls have been added. Besides the facelift, the museum that has long been restricted by a shortage of collections and funds, has greatly enlarged its permanent collections to upgrade its artistic profile.
The National Arts Museum was one of Beijing's top 10 landmark buildings in the 1960s. It will be further extended in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
