Thirty-four years ago on Sunday, US astronaut Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the surface of the moon.
He made famous the words "It is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind " heard by more than a billion people listening 240,000 miles away on earth.
The Apollo Eleven astronauts made their historic moon walk after their lunar module separated from the command module and they landed on the lunar surface.
The American effort to send astronauts was given impetus by President John F. Kennedy who told Congress in 1961 that he wanted to place a man on the moon before the end of the decade. NASA beat the deadline by six months.
