China's National Space Administration announced on Saturday that the country has begun comprehensive research work on an environment monitoring satellite. The Environmental and Disaster Monitoring Constellation, or EDMC, was proposed in 1998 by Chinese scientists, and will, as the name suggests, work as an environmental monitoring and disaster warning network.
The EDMC will be constructed in two steps. The first stage includes three satellites--two optics satellites and one radar satellite, and will be put in place before 2005. It is expected to expand to a second stage of eight satellites--four optical ones and four radar ones. The second stage is proposed to be constructed with international cooperation.
The system will cover all the regular natural disasters including flood, drought, typhoon, earthquake, landslide, forest fire, and pestilence.
