On June 4 this year, a brand new meteorological forecast program focusing on geological disasters was launched on China Central Television. The Ministry of Land and Resources teamed up with the meteorology authority to forecast geological disasters during the flood season. The new program marks the first time that geological disasters have been forecast in mass media.
Landslides and mud-rock flows caused by heavy rain are two of the disasters the new program forecasts. So far, more than 1,000 people have already died from this kind of disaster. More than 300 of these lost their lives in the last six months.
Jiang Jianjun, Ministry of Land and Resources, said, "This forecasting system was set up to keep the government and the people on alert so they can take preventative measures in regions with heavy rainfall and complex geological conditions."
More than 400 monitor stations have been set up in disaster-prone regions. With prompt warnings from these stations, CCTV's newly-launched geological disaster forecast is one more way of helping the people to understand disaster-prevention.
