Guangdong health workers recover from SARS

    In south China's Guangdong Province, the Guangzhou hospital where a number of health care workers became infected by SARS announced on Sunday they have all since been restored to full health. Meanwhile, health experts are stressing that SARS has been proven to be preventable and curable. A scheme of diagnosis and treatment is being further revised and perfected.

    With no precedent to go by and having been exposed to the virus through lengthy contact with SARS-infected patients, a number of health care workers in the hospital became infected. All have since recovered from the illness after getting medical treatment.

    "I was affected by SARS. So the inflammation of my lungs was aggravating me even after my fever disappeared. But after a two-week treatment in hospital, the inflammation disappeared and I recovered," said Huang Zitong, deputy director of No.2 Hospital attached to Guangzhou Zhongshan University.

    Most of the workers who have recovered from the disease are now back at work again. But the hospital is stressing that SARS is not incurable and that it learning more about the virus.

    "Actually the entire Guangdong region has figured out a complete set of rescue measures to deal with SARS patients with different symptoms," said Huang Zitong.

    The Chinese Health Ministry is now further studying the measures proposed by the hospital and hopes to set up diagnosis criteria and a series of treatment guidelines as soon as possible. Meanwhile, experts say that it is not that easy to get affected as long as people pay attention to their personal hygiene. They also say that SARS is not as scary as people imagine.
