A Chinese respiratory diseases expert said that he believed cases of serious acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) will continue to fall this month in Guangdong Province thanks to effective measures being taken to prevent and combat the disease.

Zhong Nanshan, who is head of the Respiratory Diseases Institute in the provincial capital, Guangzhou, said SARS incidences began to fall in March.

Sources from the Provincial Health Department of Guangdong said that 361 cases of the disease were reported in March, down 47.5 percent from February. Nine people died of the disease in March, 18 fewer than in February, and 507 patients were discharged from hospitals, 133 more than in the previous month.

Zhong, who is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has been put in charge of the medical expert group of Guangdong Province for prevention and treatment of SARS.

Zhong believed factors such as the government's attention and closer cooperation among different medical organizations in Guangdong had all contributed to the fall in the incidence of the respiratory disease in this southern province.

Zhong's institute has treated most of the patients suffering from serious SARS in Guangzhou. In February alone, five of the six serious SARS patients who were treated by the medical expert group of Guangdong recovered at Zhong's institute.
