Beijing Remains China's Biggest Car Market
THU, FEB 28, 2002
Beijing remained China's biggest car market in 2001 with new car sales hitting 100,100 units, a year-on-year growth of 22.5 percent, according to the latest statistics from Beijing Association for Automobile Circulation.
Of the total sales, 94.5 percent were domestic products. This means nearly one-seventh of homemade cars were sold in Beijing last year.
Wu Gang, deputy secretary-general of the association, said the car sales growth in Beijing was mainly propelled by the increase in private car purchase. So far, 12 percent of Beijing households have their own cars.
Beijing has been the foremost market of leading domestic car makers. Car dealers mostly agree that "if a car has good market in Beijing, it will succeed in other parts of the country".
According to the association, Jetta, Santana, Fukang, Passat, Audi, Alto, Guangzhou Honda, Shanghai Buick, Xiali Hongqi (red flag) topped the sales chart in Beijing in 2001.
