Accidental Damage Poses Biggest Risk for PC Owners, Says Study
THU, FEB 28, 2002
Accidental damage poses the biggest single risk for personal computer owners in the United States, according to a new insurance industry study released Wednesday.
Safeware, a U.S. insurance agency specializing in insuring computers, electronics and high-tech equipment, said an analysis of personal computer claims filed in 2001 showed that 59 percent resulted from accidental damage, up from 56 percent in 2000 and 49 percent in 1999.
The increase was attributed to the growing popularity of notebook PCs, especially among students and business professionals.Notebook claims rose 70 percent in 2001 and accounted for about 96 percent of claims handled by the company. According to Safeware's report, approximately 2.4 million PC owners in 2001 incurred equipment damage or loss that could have resulted in an insurance claim.
"Notebook PC claims continue to rise, and do so because of carelessness," the report said. "Most claims could be prevented by using common sense." Human error includes leaving a PC in a car in plain view and accidentally spilling a liquid on a PC.
Accidental damage was followed by theft and power surge, according to the report. Desktop PCs are less vulnerable to accidental damage, but five times more likely to be damaged by a power surge or lightning than a notebook PC.
