Nepal Seeks International Support for Water Resources Development
WED, FEB 27, 2002
The Nepali government has requested the international community to help its work in water resources and harness hydro power potentials in the country.

Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said, on the opening of the first South Asia Water Forum kicked off in Kathmandu Tuesday, that the Nepali government would like to ask the donor communities and investors to help Nepal in its development of water resources.

Although Nepal is a water rich country, it can not solve the drinking water and hydro power problems by itself, Deuba said, adding that Nepal is facing uneven and temporal distribution of water.

The three-day Forum, jointly organized by Nepal Water Resources Development Organization and Global Water Partnership, is attended by more than 250 officials and water experts from Asian countries including Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Japan, Bangladesh and others.

During the Forum, participants will discuss the issues on water for energy, integrated water resources management, water and poverty, water and women, water and culture, dam and development, hydro power pricing, regional water partnership, water law and some others.

Nepal is the second richest water country in the world with per-capita water availability of 10,000 cubic meters, but it faces uneven and temporal distribution of water.

Drinking water is one of the biggest problems in Nepal including in the capital city of Kathmandu because of lack of investment in the water resources development sector.
