Wall Street Stocks End Sharply Higher

Wall Street stocks ended sharply higher Monday, with the Dow index breaking through its 10,000 mark, amid investors' buying supported by a strong existing home sales and upbeat earnings forecasts from corporate icons.
The Dow Jones industrial average surged 177.56 points, or 1.78 percent, to 10,145.71, after jumping 133.47 points on Friday.
Broader stock indicators were sharply up. The technology heavy Nasdaq composite index rocketed 45.34 points, or 2.63 percent, to 1,769.88. The Standard & Poor's 500 index soared 19.59 points, or 1.80 percent, to 1,109.43.
The market was on the way up in the entire session as investors were more optimistic about the economy and corporate earnings after the National Association of Realtors reported that sales of existing homes soared a record 16.2 percent to an annual rate of 6.04 million units in January and some positive profits forecasts came from General Motors and Qualcomm.
General Motors, the world's largest auto maker, climbed 2.37 dollars to 55.48 dollars after raising its first-quarter and 2002 earnings outlook, while Ford grew 65 cents to 15.23 dollars, and Daimler Chrysler advanced 1.85 dollars to 39.73 dollars.
Qualcomm jumped 3.21 dollars, or 10 percent, to 35.91 dollars as the telecom company reaffirmed its second-quarter earnings estimates. Sun Microsystems surged 80 cents, or 10 percent, to 8.87 dollars after Banc of America raised its rating for the company to "buy" from "market performer".
In the technology sector, Intel gained 1.49 dollars to 31.02 dollars, Microsoft added 1.08 dollars to 59.08 dollars, Hewlett-Packard increased 69 cents to 19.98 dollars, Oracle rose 84 cents to 16.34 dollars, and Cisco Systems rallied 36 cents to 15.60 dollars.
The NYSE index closed up 8.08 points at 576.36, the American Stock Exchange index gained 5.86 points to 862.17, and the Russell2000 index of smaller companies added 3.12 points to 468.19.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 8-to-5 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,930 up, 1,182 down and 241 unchanged.
NYSE trading volume decreased to 1.33 billion shares from 1.40 billion in the previous session.
