Israeli Tanks Enter Southern Gaza
MON, FEB 25, 2002
Palestinian National Authority (PNA) officials said on Sunday that the Israeli tanks and bulldozers entered the Palestinian controlled area in southern Gaza Strip.
Colonel Khaled Abu Ella, public security chief in southern Gaza told reporters that three tanks and two bulldozers entered on Sunday afternoon about one kilometer into a Palestinian controlled area near the Gush Katif Jewish settlement junction.
During the military incursion, Israeli soldiers opened intensive heavy gunfire at Palestinian houses, and bulldozed a wide area that included fruit trees, said the security chief.
However, no injuries were reported during the incursion.
Abu Ella said that Israeli tanks entered half kilometer into the western part of Rafah town on southern Gaza Strip, opening fire at Palestinian houses and wounding a 12-year-old girl moderately in both of her legs.
Meanwhile, Palestinian medical sources said that a pregnant Palestinian woman was seriously wounded when Israeli soldiers opened fire on the car she was traveling in at a roadblock south of the West Bank town of Nablus on Sunday.
The sources said that the woman was on her way to a hospital in Nablus and Israeli soldiers allowed the car to pass through the Hawara roadblock.
Palestinian eyewitnesses said that when the car reached the a-Dahiya roadblock, however, soldiers waved through the car, but then opened fire as the car passed. The woman was shot and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
