Home | China | World | Business PNA Weighs Cutting Ties With Israel MON, FEB 25, 2002     The Palestinian National Authority(PNA) officials said Sunday that they study cutting political and security contacts with the Israeli government in light of Israel's decision to ban Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat from leaving the West Bank town of Ramallah. A high-ranking PNA security official said the PNA security institution recommended in a report submitted to Arafat to cut all political and security ties with Israel in response to the Israeli security cabinet decision. "We recommend cutting all ties with Israel because Israel did not fulfill its promises and commitments to end the blockade imposed on President Arafat," said the security official in condition of anonymity. The Israeli security cabinet had voted earlier on Sunday that Arafat would not be able to leave the town of Ramallah unless he fulfills the Israeli demands to end violence and arrest militants. The PNA security forces arrested three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), who were allegedly directly involved in killing Israeli cabinet minister Rehavam Zeevi last October, and PFLP Secretary General Ahmed Saadat, as well as a Palestinian official involved in Karine A weapon-smuggling affair. The PNA condemns in a statement the Israeli cabinet decision and said that "this decision is shameful and shows that the Israeli government wants the intifada (uprising) to continue and is not intending to resume the peace process."
