Indonesia's New Economic Package Draft Nearly Completed
TUE, FEB 19, 2002
The Indonesian government's new economic package draft to spur economic recovery is now 80 percent ready, Vice-President Hamzah Haz has said.
"Hopefully, it can be entirely finalized next week," Vice-President Hamzah Haz was quoted by the Antara News Agency as saying Tuesday.
The vice-president said the new economic policy would cover all sectors including the financial and real sectors and was also expected to be a correction of past economic policies which had paid scant attention to grassroots economics.
Commenting on Trade Minister Rini Suwandi's recent complaint that her move to revive the real sector had been hindered by the slow pace of government decision-making, Hamzah said it was not easy to make quick decisions on economic recovery because not all ministers were connected with sectors relating to economic recovery.
The vice-president said economic growth in the past three years could not as yet make up for the minus 14 percent economic growth that once before.
In view of that, Hamzah said, he hoped the new package would no longer be partial in nature.
There were two essential sectors for economic recovery, namely the financial and real sectors. "As long as the two sectors are not good there will never be any recovery," he added.
