Hong Kong has opened Spring/Summer Fashion Week, its annual international garment trade fair. It's one of the first large-scale events in the region since it was taken off the World Health Organization's list of SARS hot-spots.

More than 1,000 overseas buyers attended Tuesday's opening of the four-day long Hong Kong Fashion Week, Spring/Summer 2004. Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the fair aims to promote the Hong Kong garment industry in the world market.

Twelve young fashion designers are competing for six prizes in the Hong Kong New Fashion Award 2003.

Held for the third consecutive year, the Hong Kong New Fashion collection Award is aiming to encourage Hong Kong clothing enterprises to start their own collections and brands by working more closely with creative talent.

The garment trade fair features 517 exhibitors from Hong Kong and 10 other countries and regions including the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Thailand, the U.S., Malaysia, and the Philippines.
