    7. The countdown to the Three Gorges' date with deep-water destiny is propelling Chinese researchers to unearth as much as they can from below the projected watermark. The Zhang Fei Temple, stone sculptures and ancient tombs were among the historic artifacts to find new homes in November. The work means these cultural relics will not be lost to the rising waters of the hydroelectric power project.

    8. Humanity's dominance of the Earth has made the survival of some animals a major concern. As winter set in, authorities worked to bring the endangered giant panda, elk, paddlefish, golden monkey, crested ibis and Tibetan gazelle, as well as rare native bird life, under the umbrella of state protection.

    9. Winter arrived but it was no time for scientists to hibernate. The Chinese South Pole expedition team set out on their 19th mission to the frozen continent of Antarctica on the "Snow Dragon" research ship. China also sent an expedition team on a 45-day adventure near the North Pole this summer. There they gathered some first-hand data to study the climate and environmental evolution of both the region and the planet.

    10. Last but definitely not least comes a "Hero." As the credits roll on China's year of entertainment, the latest work of the country's leading cinematic visionary, Zhang Yimou, hit the big screen. A big budget, a star studded cast and an award-winning crew --- the Chinese martial-arts flick has once again put Chinese cinema on the movie map. This "Hero" hopes to carry the national flag on the long march to international acclaim.
