This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two and also the victory of the Chinese people's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. A special commission has been set up to hold five important commemorations in Beijing. Veterans and international friends who helped China during the war will be participating.
Officials say a cultural performance on Friday will kick off the special serial of activities. Veterans, national heroes and international supporters have been invited. Some will be awarded medals by Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Organizers say China's role in World War Two, and its War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, is something to be proud of -- and something that's won broad support from the international community.
Chen Haosu, President of Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said, "The commemorations show that China cherishes friendship with foreign friends, and remembers international support. We warmly welcome the attendance of these friends."
China's contribution in the war came with enormous sacrifice, 35 million deaths and casualties, and 600 billion US dollars in economic losses.
Wang Guoqing said the national spirit and international cooperation will continue to play an important role in China's development in the coming 20 years. Officials praised Taiwan compatriots' resistance of Japanese colonization, and acknowledged the contributions by Kuomintang soldiers.
They also called on the Japanese government to face up to the extensive war crimes its troops committed in Asia during World War Two, in order to promote better relations with its neighbors.
